The global cruise industry remains one of the fastest growing segments of international tourism. What began in the late 1970s as a reinvention of ocean liners has evolved into a 35 million passenger sector projected to reach more than 40 million travelers within the next few years.
At 1TourismWorld 2026, Bertrand Petyt, Director of Hotel Operations at Viking Ocean Cruises, joins Glenn Tyranski for a strategic discussion on the cruise industry’s 2026 market trends and outlook, examining resilience, innovation, and structural transformation.
Bertrand traces the origins of modern cruising to the moment airlines displaced transatlantic liners, forcing shipping companies to transform transportation vessels into experience driven itineraries. He shares key data that frames the scale of the sector. Of roughly 40,000 ships globally across all categories, only about 400 are cruise ships. Yet passenger volume has grown from approximately 2 million annually in 1985 to 35 million in 2024, with continued double digit expansion projected through 2028.
The conversation explores how the market is segmented across four primary categories. The contemporary segment, representing roughly 80 percent of passengers, operates large vessels with strong onboard revenue models. The premium segment offers elevated positioning with slightly smaller ships. The expedition and luxury segments focus on destination depth, smaller vessels, and higher per diem structures, with expedition cruising emerging as one of the newest growth areas over the past fifteen years.
Bertrand explains that North America remains the dominant source market, accounting for the majority of global cruise passengers, while Europe continues to grow and Asia represents long term potential.
A central theme of the discussion is post pandemic transformation. Cruise lines undertook fleet renewal, investing in newer, more efficient, and more environmentally advanced ships. Technology, including AI, is being deployed not to replace human service but to elevate it, freeing crew members to deliver more personalized and meaningful guest interactions.
In the luxury segment, further fragmentation is underway. Established brands are repositioning while new entrants such as Four Seasons Yachts, Orient Express Sailing Yachts, and Aman at Sea introduce ultra luxury offerings built around brand storytelling, product differentiation, and curated experiences.
Bertrand also highlights the operational discipline required to deliver consistent excellence across voyages, including extended world cruises of 90 days or more. Emotional intelligence, sensory awareness, and attention to detail become defining factors in shaping memorable experiences at sea.
The cruise industry may represent just one percent of global ship volume, yet its growth trajectory, brand innovation, and operational sophistication position it as one of the most dynamic sectors in global tourism heading into 2026 and beyond.
