Let's talk about the Malaweg language.

Malaueg Language:
The Malaueg language, sometimes spelled Malaweg, is primarily spoken in the town of Rizal in Cagayan and parts of neighboring areas like Lasam and Apayao. While some linguistic studies have categorized it as a dialect of Itawit due to similarities, the uniqueness of the Malaueg language is acknowledged by both groups. The distinction between Malaueg and Itawit may have developed over time due to the blending of influences from nearby Itawit and Isnag communities. Despite this, the language remains a crucial marker of identity for the Malaueg people.

Malaueg People:
The Malaueg people are an ethnolinguistic group in the Cagayan Valley, particularly centered in the municipality of Rizal. Established as a town in the early 17th century by the Spanish, the name "Malaueg" is thought to derive from words meaning "similar to" and "stream," possibly referring to the Matalag River. Historically described as brave and warlike, the Malaueg people resisted Spanish conversion efforts, as seen in the 1607 rebellion led by the animist priestess Caquenga. Although eventually Christianized, they have maintained a strong sense of identity and pride in their heritage.

Malaueg Culture:
Malaueg culture is a blend of indigenous beliefs and Christianity, with traditions that have persisted and adapted over centuries. The local epic of Biuag and Malana, which portrays the hero Malana as hailing from Malaueg lands, is a source of pride for the community. Folk practices such as “atang” (food offerings) and “paanud” (healing ritual) demonstrate the integration of indigenous customs with Catholic faith, illustrating the dynamic and resilient nature of Malaueg cultural identity.
