Good day! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Maranao language.

Maranao is an Austronesian language spoken by the Maranao people around Lake Lanao in Mindanao, Philippines. It is part of the Danao subgroup of languages, closely related to Maguindanao and Iranun. The language has been influenced by Arabic, due to the people's Islamic heritage, and by Malay and Spanish over centuries of interaction. Maranao traditionally uses the Kirim script, which is derived from Arabic, though today the Latin alphabet is more commonly employed. The language is essential for passing down Maranao oral traditions, including epic poetry, chants, and legends, such as those involving the Sarimanok, a mythological bird in Maranao culture.

Maranao People:
The Maranao people are an indigenous Muslim ethnic group native to the region around Lake Lanao on the island of Mindanao, Philippines. Their name means "people of the lake." They are the one of the largest non-Christian ethnic group in the Philippines, with population of more than 1.8 million (2020 census) The Maranao have a deep-rooted Islamic faith, adopted in the 14th century, and are known for their strong sense of clan loyalty and social organization. They have a rich artistic heritage, being highly skilled in weaving, woodcarving, and metalwork. The Maranao people are proud of their storied history and have maintained their cultural identity despite external influences.

Maranao Culture:
Maranao culture is a vibrant blend of pre-Islamic traditions and Islamic influences, particularly evident in their visual arts, music, and folklore. The Sarimanok, a colorful bird with fish in its beak, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Maranao culture. It is often seen in intricate "okir" designs, which feature flowing, stylized patterns on woodcarvings, textiles, and architectural details. The Maranao people have a traditional house called "Torogan", a house where the royals live. The Maranao are also known for the "kulintang" ensemble, a set of gongs used in traditional music, and their rich oral literature, particularly the "Darangen" epic, which tells tales of bravery, love, and adventure, one of their famous dance is called "Singkil", a royal dance that utilizes bamboo poles. Maranao cuisine usually includes spices and rich coconit flavours, dishes such as Piyaparan a Manok, Piyaparan a Udang, and Ryandang (Rendang) are a perfect example of a Maranao taste, one of their signature dish is a condiment called "Palapa", a mixture of local/native scallions called "Sakurab" and with spices and ginger.
