French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.

Mauritian Creole, a French-based Creole language, is the lingua franca of Mauritius and incorporates words from English, African, and Asian languages, reflecting the country's diverse cultural heritage. While Mauritian Creole is commonly spoken at home, French is often used in the workplace, and French and English are taught in schools. English is primarily used for administrative and educational purposes, and the media widely use French.
