French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.

Haitian Creole, a French-based creole language, is spoken by 13 million people globally and is one of Haiti's two official languages, alongside French. It is the native language of most Haitians. The three main dialects of Haitian Creole are Northern (spoken in Cap-Haïtien), Central (spoken in Port-au-Prince), and Southern (spoken in the Cayes area).
