French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.

The Burgundian language, an Oïl language, is spoken in the Burgundy region, especially in the Morvan area. The Burgundians' arrival introduced Germanic influences to the Gallo-Romance dialects. Southern dialects along the Saône River, such as Brionnais-Charolais, have been influenced by the nearby Arpitan language, which is linked to the heartland of the former Kingdom of Burgundy.
