Introduction to Ear Training for Baritone Ukulele Players
Today we are going to learn about ear training, specifcally where to start for baritone ukulele players. Ear training is a big part of becoming a better musician and if you have a friend it is quite easy to get started.
The purpose of ear training is to make so you now what is being played simply by listening to it, you don't need sheet music, you don't need song sheets or a tutorial, you just need your ears. Technically what we are developing is relative pitch, you are ability to hear sounds relative to other sounds, perfect pitch is the ability to hear a note in a vacuum and identify it, which is so much more advanced and more genetic than it is actually a skill.
Listening exercises are going to develop to areas, your ability to hear harmony, which is the chords and chord progressions, and the ability to hear melody, defined as "a sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying" this is the part of the song that is sung, but it doesn't have to be limited to the voice, melody can be played on instruments as well.
Now for the two beginner games, try and incorporate these into your ukulele groups, they will help you tremendously.
Harmony
Just like learning any skill you start small and work your way up, the easy beginner game for harmony is one that I play called "Major or Minor" where I simply play a chord, you can see my hands, and you have to tell me just based on what you hear if I am playing a major chord or a minor chord. Use this as a warm up until you can get it every time. Once you get this one down you can expand the game to "Major, Minor, 7" or "Major, Minor, Sus"
Why is this beneficial? One reason is because if you hear a chord progression and you are able to break it down to something like major minor major minor. The key has 3 major chords and 3 minor chords, so instead of guessing one of 6 chords you are guessing one of 3 chords. It may seem simple, but it is step one to developing you ear.
Melody
Higher, Lower the Same. This game is pretty straight forward to, you play one note then you play a second note and the listener has to say if the note is higher in pitch or lower in pitch, or the same. This may seem overly simplistic but when you are listening to a melody it is much easier to work it out by ear if you are able to get the motion. The next game is you tell the person the first note and that have to find the next note. This is even better if you have the same instrument. Another option is playing through notes and you have to play higher lower for the two following notes.
