The Gallic Wars (58–50 BCE) were Julius Caesar's brutal military campaigns to conquer Gaul (modern France, Belgium, and parts of Switzerland), immortalized in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico. Caesar's legions crushed Gallic tribes like the Helvetii and Belgae, faced the Germanic chieftain Ariovistus, and famously crossed the Rhine River and English Channel to intimidate Germanic and British tribes. The war climaxed with Vercingetorix's revolt (52 BCE), ending in his surrender after the Siege of Alesia—a masterpiece of Roman engineering. Caesar's victories expanded Rome's territory, enriched him politically, and set the stage for his civil war against Pompey.
