The Battle of Maldon (991 AD) was a pivotal Viking-Age clash where Anglo-Saxon forces, led by Earl Byrhtnoth, faced a Viking raiding army along the Blackwater River in Essex, England. Despite a valiant stand, the Anglo-Saxons were defeated due to Byrhtnoth's controversial decision to allow the Vikings to cross the causeway, leading to his death and the payment of Danegeld (tribute) to prevent further raids. Immortalized in the Old English poem "The Battle of Maldon", this battle symbolizes Anglo-Saxon heroic ideals and the escalating Viking threat to England.
