The Battle of Allia (390/387 BC) was a catastrophic Roman defeat against invading Senone Gauls led by Brennus, who crushed the outnumbered Roman army near the Allia River. The Gauls exploited Rome's disorganized defenses, marching on to sack Rome itself—the only time the city fell to an enemy for 800 years. Though later Roman historians exaggerated its impact (claiming the Capitol was saved by geese), the disaster forced Rome to reform its military, adopting the maniple system and stronger walls (like the Servian Wall). This humiliation became a rallying cry for Roman resilience.
