The Elora Cataract Trailway runs alongside the Grand River, which makes it one of my favourite trails visually. There are also a number of very cool stops along the way, especially towards the west end of the trail. The towns of Fergus and Elora have some very decent lunch spots and Belwood is reported to have the best butter tarts in Ontario.
You do need to work hard for these luxuries though as the trails is sandy, muddy and rutted and in the spring when it is wet, you are expending extra energy just getting your bile through the clingy surface.
That should not stop you visiting though because there are plenty of places to start and that means you can do a shorter route. If you start at Shand Dam and head west, you will be able to see the dam and the towns of Fergus and Elora in approximately 25 kms of riding.
