The Variable Valve Timing system can have a defect that requires replacement of the system components (see Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0094-09 "2GR-FE Engine Ticking Noise"). This fix is expensive and laborious. It is required in some situations, but not all. In many cases, the "death rattle" or ticking noise can be fixed very easily and cheaply. Watch this video to see how.
NOTE: The fix in this video applies to the temporary vvt gear rattle on cold start. This noise lasts for a few seconds only. The fix does not address badly damaged gears that make continuous noise.
Part numbers for o-rings
90430-A0001 is the single o-ring,
11159-0P010 is a set of two double o-rings.
