Описание: Directly after my diagnosis with bipolar 1, someone I trusted gave me some horrible advice about my illness.

My college friend Zach told me that I could outsmart my bipolar and effectively no longer have mania or depression. Mind over matter.

He said he was able to trick his body into never getting sick, so I could do the same with bipolar.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t work.

Instead, I felt defeated and duped right after being devastated by my bipolar 1 diagnosis.

In this video, I explain why I bought into this advice and why people should never give medical advice to someone with a serious mental illness unless they are a psychiatrist.

I’m sure every one of us with bipolar disorder has stories of well-meaning people giving us horrible advice about the illness.
