Tongariro Northern Circuit - my experience from 05. November 2024:
Trail itinerary:
44.9 km in 2.5 days, Counter-clockwise Loop
Day #1: 24km, Whakapapa Village to Oturere Hut
Day #2: 12km, Oturere Hut to Mangatepopo
Day #3: 9km, Mangatepopo to Whakapapa Village
The Tongariro Northern Circuit is an extended version of the renowned Alpine Crossing Trail in the Tongariro National Park and part of New Zealand’s Great Walks Series.
The trail passes alpine vegetation, forests, magnificent lakes, and desolated mountain environments.
It is not utterly difficult to walk, however, weather conditions can heavily affect track difficulty.
I have decided for a 2 nights loop as I wanted to seize the days for filming. Certainly, also 1 night loops can be considered if individual fitness allows for it.
Tramping with a tent was no problem as the huts along the way provide pitchsites which are in good condition (pre-booking required).
Overall, the walk is very beautiful given the breath-taking volcanic scenery and can be highly recommended for NZ hikers.
