Furthermore, drivers with previous DUIs are nearly twice as likely to be involved in a fatal crash than drivers with no prior conviction.

One of those drivers was arrested yesterday in Dana Point. The suspect had three previous DUI convictions before being involved in a fatal crash Sunday at Stonehill Drive and Golden Lantern.

So the tragedy in Dana Point highlights the fact that more needs to be done to stop drunk driving.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, most drivers have driven drunk 80 times before they are caught by police and arrested on DUI charges.

Unfortunately, it seems the only way to get these drivers off the road for good is if they are involved in a fatal crash such as this one.

First-time DUI convictions typically result in fines, a driver's license is suspended, probation, and DUI school. However, more needs to be done to stop drunk driving to keep our roads safe.

Serene Vernon is facing multiple charges for the death of 88-year-old Melvin Weibel.

Police booked the suspect into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder due to her previous convictions as well as DUI causing injury.

She was driving a Land Rover SUV on Stonehill Drive when she allegedly drove through a red left-turn arrow light at the intersection with Golden Lantern. The SUV crashed into the side of the oncoming Ford Transit van and killed the elderly passenger. Meanwhile, the driver in the van was seriously injured and taken to a hospital.

Also, the day after the crash, the suspect was replaced as president and shareholder at LoanStream Mortgage where she had worked for the past decade. The company issued a press release offering its condolences to the victim's family and announcing her immediate replacement at the mortgage lending firm.
