Tonight is one of the deadliest days to travel on California roads due to drunk driving.

The New Year’s Eve holiday is a holiday where drinking is common and unfortunately, not everyone has a plan to get home safely.

It's New Year's Eve and the CHP plans to use all of its available resources to step up patrols on roads and freeways throughout California.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31st until late Wednesday, Jan. 1st, deputies from the California Highway Patrol will be making arrests for DUI, speeding, and other traffic violations to motorists breaking the law.

But there are millions of motorists and even with every police officer available, they won't be able to stop them all.

Attorney James Johnson’s suggestion to avoid drunk drivers and major traffic is to avoid driving after 10 p.m.

Some people celebrate the East Coast New Year's Eve at 9 p.m. Pacific time, but if you must go out to celebrate at midnight make sure you have a sober ride home.

As long as one person in your group stays sober, you have a safe ride home. Another option is to stay at a nearby hotel to avoid driving home drunk or tired. If you attend a family party, consider sleeping over.

Last year, the CHP’s major traffic enforcement team made 892 arrests statewide on New Year’s Eve and Day.
