We are barely one week into the New Year and already a deadly wrong-way driver crash in Pasadena has taken the lives of two people.
So here's what we know so far about the fatal wrong-way driver crash in Pasadena.
A driver entered the westbound Ventura 134 Freeway in the wrong direction from the North San Rafael Avenue off-ramp.
A white sedan and a silver minivan were first to crash and one of those vehicles burst into flames. At least two or three other vehicles were also involved.
At this time, we don't know which vehicle the wrong-way driver was in, but police said the motorist was alone in their vehicle.
Authorities have said the driver collided with one vehicle occupied by a mother and her teenage daughter and another vehicle with a father and his teenage son.
Yesterday we learned that the wrong-way driver was one of the two people who died, but we don't know who the other person was.
Also, at least three others were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
This is a tragedy for the family of the innocent person who died. My condolences go out to them as the cope with losing a loved one in such a violent crash.
Hopefully, those who were injured get the medical care they need to have a full recovery.
Wrong-Way Driver Crashes
These wrong-way driver crashes appear to be on the rise here in California.
This is the second in the Pasadena area in just over a week. On Dec. 29th, a wrong-way driver died when his car crashed head-on into a pickup truck on the Foothill 210 Freeway near Huntington Drive. In that case, the two people in the pickup truck survived.
Every year, wrong-way driver crashes kill an average of 500 people across the country. Still, the CHP says they are rare events that happen less than 1/2 of one percent in our state.
Still, CHP officials reported 208 wrong-way driver crashes in 2019, 220 in 2020, and 296 in 2021.
Most involve a driver who is intoxicated and most result in major injuries and or a death.
The best advice I have is to avoid the HOV and fast lanes in the evenings because that is the location of most of these collisions. If you see a driver coming at you, try to change lanes and move into the slow lane.
