Living a barefoot life means we let our feet be free as often as we could. Walking, training and running barefoot strengthen all aspect of our life - physical, emotional, health and spiritual. I aim to walk barefoot in nature daily, for at least 30mins to an hour. Whenever I’m in the city, I try to intersperse my walk with shoes off. Typically I go out of the house in shoes, and remove my shoes at locations which I feel are safe and not dangerous to walk on. I don’t wear earphones. I try to be at the present moment, very mindful with each step.
We were born with feet that are widest at the toes. Our foot type matters but regardless, years of chronic use of modern footwear (tapered toe-box sneakers, platforms, high heels, ultra thick foam and cushioned shoes), would decondition, deform and weaken the foot - resulting in greater dysfunctions up the kinetic chain (pelvic and lumbar alignment).
The skin in the bottom of our feet contains thousands of nerve endings that play a crucial role in sending signals to the brain to tell us how hard to strike the ground. When these nerves are blocked by thick cushions or even socks, we lose the ability to perceive the impact forces properly and we strike even harder. We also lose the ability to balance and maintain an upright posture.
Our foot has 33 joints, 26 bones and over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments - restricting the foot in conventional thick cushioned shoes will cause nerve atrophy and muscle weakening over time, leading to more joint pain issues in the feet, knees and hips.
Our foot is our foundation, and yet many do not know what to do with it - how to train it for strength, mobility and flexibility. How to walk, run and stand in proper foot posture so that our whole body posture is aligned.
