Whau Valley Dam provides high-quality water for Whangarei, and it is on the edge of the Pukenui Forest. Pukenui Forest is mostly lowland broadleaf forest, a type of habitat now rare in New Zealand. Kiwi and other endangered native animals live here. All dogs must be on leads. No swimming or boating.
Finding the Track: At the edge of the lake, on the left where the bush starts, you will find a little "goat track" that takes you down to the back end of the lake. This track continues, but it was too wet and slippery to keep walking this day.
Barefoot Tracks of Whangarei - taking you to visit the tracks in the district where you can walk in barefeet in nature. Walking in barefeet is highly beneficial to the health and wellbeing of a human, as well as having gentler impact on the world around us.
