We spent four unforgettable nights in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe, and the experience was nothing short of incredible. We enjoyed multiple walking safaris, had hyenas wander through at dinnertime, and even had elephants casually visit the camp. During the slower afternoons, we amused ourselves by gathering “elephant biscuits” for the steady stream of wildlife passing by — a quirky little pastime that became part of the adventure.
We were careful not to disturb the animals or interfere with their natural behaviour, they are very used to people in and around the camps they walk through daily. Collecting the pods from the ground was just a light‑hearted way to pass the time — nothing that affected the wildlife or the environment.
"Elephant biscuits" is a term used to describe the nutritious seed pods of the Winter Thorn tree (Faidherbia albida) in Africa, which elephants eagerly feed on, especially when they drop during winter months. These pods are highly valued, and elephants will shake trees to make them fall, creating a "feast".
Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Zimbabwe, is special for its intimate walking safaris, allowing close, safe, and often, high-adrenaline, on-foot encounters with wildlife, including the famous Mana "elephant" tree-feeders. Located along the Zambezi River, it is celebrated for its stunning, cathedral-like forests of Albida acacia, vast, open floodplains, and high concentrations of hippos and crocodiles.
