The main idea of squaring the hips is to help stretch the lower sacral part of the spine latterly, as in side to side, and to line up the spine so the spine's in a straight line as opposed to being slightly turned. The squaring also helps to stretch certain muscles in the lower pelvic area and hip joints. As the arms extend out, it stretches the spine in a linear direction and if the hips aren't square, the spine will be twisted causing strain. All in all, combined with the other principles, the spine can be stretched in multiple directions at once.
Kevin has coined the phrase, squaring to "face what's in front of you."
"Facing what's in front of you", is the basic idea of where the hips and shoulders square to the front while lining up over the front leg. Then turning to the 45 degrees and squaring over the back leg, again lining up and "facing what's in front of you", in the direction of that supporting leg.
