In a landmark development for the country’s water security, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leads the inauguration of the Angat Water Transmission Improvement Project (AWTIP) Tunnel No. 5, with the unveiling of the project marker at the Bigte Basin in Barangay Bigte, Norzagaray, Bulacan on November 28, 2025.
Located from Ipo Dam to the Bigte Basin, the project includes a 4.30-meter-diameter, 6.40-kilometer-long raw water conveyance tunnel designed to carry up to 1,642 million liters per day (MLD). Its main purpose is to provide redundancy and resilience by diversifying water transmission pathways, enable maintenance sequencing of upstream tunnels and downstream aqueducts, and improve system reliability in the face of seismic and other natural hazards.
Furthermore, this development improves the aging Umiray-Angat-Ipo-La Mesa raw water conveyance network, originally built in the 1930s and 1960s.
Led by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), in partnership with its concessionaires through the Common Purpose Facility (CPF) — a joint effort among MWSS, Manila Water and Maynilad — this guarantees synchronized design, construction and operations to meet service-area needs.
The AWTIP marks a crucial step in strengthening Metro Manila’s water supply for approximately 20 million residents in the National Capital Region (NCR) and nearby provinces, providing increased reliability and flexibility, and reducing vulnerability to disruptions in the coming decades.
