As the world becomes increasingly urban, with 68% of the global population projected to be urban by 2050, natural hazards and climate change increasingly impact urban areas and stress the built environment, critical infrastructure systems, vulnerable populations, and ecosystems, creating a complex set of challenges for local and sub-national governments. Often lacking in local regulatory and technical capabilities, risk-informed land use planning is one of the most effective tools to reduce existing risk, prevent new risk, and build resilience to disasters and climate change in urban areas. Various types and scales of land use planning activities can reduce the vulnerability and risk of the built environment through strategic zoning practices and development control (including construction practices and land tenure regimes), mitigate and adapt to climate change by protecting environmentally sensitive areas and ensuring optimal use of energy, and build resilience with critical (including green and blue) infrastructure and urban design solutions.
Participatory processes in risk-informed land use planning practices also add to the resilience of communities. This session will launch the forthcoming Handbook on Risk-Informed Land Use Planning, delving into the challenges of key geological, hydrometeorological, and environmental hazards and offering practical and accessible ways for practitioners to conduct better land use planning in risk-sensitive ways. It will also highlight key case studies from a variety of global perspectives. Participants will come away with an appreciation of the importance of better urban and land use planning for reducing specific and compound risks, and with practical guidance on reducing the risks that they and their cities face.
ABOUT THE GLOBAL FACILITY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION AND RECOVERY (GFDRR) is a global partnership that helps low- and lower-middle-income countries better understand and reduce their vulnerabilities to natural hazards and adapt to climate change. GFDRR provides grant financing, technical assistance, training and knowledge sharing activities to mainstream disaster and climate risk management in national and regional policies, strategies, and investment plans. The Program Management Unit, located within the World Bank, manages http://www.gfdrr.org grant resources to carry out GFDRR’s mission.
ABOUT THE WORLD BANK GROUP 🌐 The World Bank Group is one of the world’s largest sources of funding and knowledge for low-income countries. Its five institutions share a commitment to reducing poverty, increasing shared prosperity, and promoting sustainable development. http://www.worldbank.org
