Описание: Want to go beyond just watching? Enroll in the Engineer Plan or Industry Professional Plan at https://context-engineering.vizuara.ai
to get access to all Google Colab notebooks, interactive web exercises, private Discord community, Miro boards, a private GitHub repo with all code, and the capstone build sessions where you build a production-grade AI agent alongside the instructors. These plans give you hands-on materials for every session and direct support from the teaching team — everything you need to actually implement what you learn, not just watch it.

In Session 2 of the AI Context Engineering Bootcamp, Dr. Sreedath Panat dives deep into the instructional layer of an LLM system — the system prompt. If Session 1 explained the six elements that make up the context of a large language model, this lecture focuses on one of the most powerful and misunderstood pieces of that stack: system instructions and persistent rule files such as CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md.

The session begins by breaking down the anatomy of a well-designed system prompt, explaining the five essential components that determine how an AI behaves: identity, rules, output format, knowledge, and tools. These elements together act like the “constitution” of an AI interaction, shaping how the model interprets requests, formats its responses, and decides what capabilities it can use.

We then explore Anthropic’s “Right Altitude Principle”, a practical guideline for writing effective system instructions. Instructions that are too vague cause the model to guess and hallucinate, while instructions that are too rigid break when the input changes slightly. The right balance is instructions that are specific enough to guide behavior but flexible enough to handle real-world variation.

The lecture also explains how system prompt structure impacts model performance. We compare two common organizational styles — XML tags and Markdown headers — and discuss why structured prompts often perform better than large blocks of unstructured text.

Another major topic in this session is persistent context files used by modern AI coding tools. We examine files such as CLAUDE.md, Cursor rules, GitHub Copilot instruction files, and AGENTS.md, and discuss how these files act as project-wide instructions that are automatically loaded into the model’s context. This persistent layer forms the foundation of the context stack hierarchy, where long-lived instructions sit below dynamic elements like tool outputs and retrieved knowledge.

The session also introduces the “Start Minimal, Then Add” methodology for building system prompts. Instead of writing a huge prompt upfront, the recommended approach is to start with a minimal instruction set, run real tasks, observe failures, and then iteratively add rules based on actual errors. This method prevents bloated prompts and produces far more reliable AI systems.

In the final part of the lecture, we explore few-shot prompting patterns and when to use each type:

Input-output pairs for classification and structured prediction

Chain-of-thought reasoning for multi-step decision making

Prefix-suffix patterns for structured outputs like JSON and code generation

The session concludes with a practical exercise showing how adding a small persistent context file (~200 tokens) can dramatically improve AI output quality. Using the exact same model and task, responses jump from generic, incorrect outputs to highly structured, production-quality responses simply by introducing the right contextual rules.

This lecture forms the foundation for the rest of the bootcamp, because well-designed system prompts are the layer that controls how all other context components behave.
