I have been waiting for this unboxing video for awhile now. So here it is! The TOPS Knives VI ax or Viking inspired AXE! To be completely honest I bought this tactical axe on looks alone. I mean this axe looks mean and like it can do some major chopping and cleaving. But as you know, we are going to use this like a tactical axe and use it for axe throwing!
The DESIGN! First thing I noticed when I unboxed it here on camera for this first look or first impression. And first impressions on this axe actually exceeding my expectations. I knew what it looked like but in person, its just something completely different then what you see online.
The cutting edge on this axe is big and round, just like Dave likes it! A standard convex grind from the manufacturer and decently sharp. But I think with a more narrow bit profile and shaving those cheeks down on the axe head, it will not only smash harder but sink deeper into my axe throwing targets!
The spike on the axe head is impressive in design and shape! You get two cutting edges which is always nice and both are angled a bit different for different tasks or cutting abilities. Flipping the axe around and holding it backwards feels good in the hand if you needed to use the spike as a primary edge. Overall you get a lot of cutting edge surface with this tactical axe!
The axe is not small by any means and it has some weight to it. The axe is made of 1075 carbon steel and it has thickness to it. I'll be impressed if someone has been able to break one. The weight distribution on the axe is towards the handle however with the axe in hand, it feels more evenly distributed and with the feel I initially got, I think it would make a good chopping axe.
The axe handle had micarta grip panels that feel really nice in the hand with a somewhat smaller circumference but it's enough to not be an issue. This will be the first time testing micarta axe handles on this channel so I am interested to see how well they hold up. They have a nice texture but I will need to actually test it to see how much grip I actually get and if it's well suited for axe throwing.
The only cons I found on this initial impressions and unboxing video of the TOPS Knives VI Ax was the o-rings on the micarda grip panels. They may work well for designated axe swinging or axe chopping but for me, it doesn't feel the best for axe throwing. Honestly I didn't care for the feel in the hand for general use either. Secondly the weight. It's not bad but I feel like it may be off center just a bit for axe throwing which can cause rotation wobble in the air. But we still need to throw the axe and find out.
Overall first impressions of the TOPS knives VI Ax looks very promising for testing. And after I am able to throw this axe and put it to work I'll be able to give more of an opinion. But as of now, the length of the axe feels good for the weight, I like the cutting edge on the bit and the spike and I like the general feel in the hand.
