Join me on this shoot from the hip/vlog style video where I try to find my Aerobic Threshold or AeT. In my previous video (link below and in the cards) I motivated identifying your AeT and AnT (Anaerobic Threshold) in order to properly set up your hear rate intensity zones so we can accurately track how hard we are training.
In this video I use the indoor version of the heart rate drift test outlined by the Uphill Athlete (link below) to try to pin point my AeT. In the end, it took me 4 tests to find a close lower bound on this heart rate where I am working hard but still only burning fats using aerobic respiration and thus can use this intensity for endurance events and be sustainable.
I use a 5% drift threshold as it has been shown that a 5% average heart rate drift over a 1 hour interval corresponds to a build up of about a 2 mmol/L blood concentration of Lactic Acid. This is the commonly accepted boundary for when one moves from zone 2 into zone 3 due to the recruitment of more fast twitch muscle fibers but, more importantly, when ATP/cellular energy generation start including the metabolization of carbohydrates (as opposed to the highly sustainable fat metabolization of zone 1 and 2) while still within the first 2 hours of a workout.
More details of the test can be found in "Training for the Uphill Athlete: A Manual for Mountain Runners and Ski Mountaineers" by Steve House, Scott Johnston and Kilian Jornet and also at:
