During 2022 and 2023, the Welsh Highland Railway celebrated the Centenary of the original route opening with a series of events
The first of which was over the weekend of the 30th & 31st July 2022, which marked the Centenary of the Northern Half of the Route between Dinas & Rhyd Ddu opening on the 31st July 1922. (Rhyd Ddu was named South Snowdon at the time)
The highlight of the event was original WHR Loco; 'Russell' hauling a train made up of Welsh Highland Heritage Railway stock. Consisting of either rebuilt or replica stock from the original Welsh Highland Railway.
This marked the first time in 86 years since Russell last hauled Passenger Trains to Rhyd Ddu in 1936. (And the first time since 1937 the loco had been seen on the Foothills of Snowdon)
FR England Loco 'Palmerston' also hauled a train of Heritage Stock made up of carriages regularly seen on the original Welsh Highland Railway.
The Heritage Trains ran on a Timetable almost identical to the timetable that operated in 1922.
Garratt 87 also hauled a series of shuttles using Modern WHR stock between Caernarfon and Dinas - very similar to operations when the first section of the rebuilt Welsh Highland Railway opened in 1997.
Both Lyd and Hugh Napier were providing footplate rides at Dinas for visitors as well
This video also contains footage of Russell ‘Returning Home’ on the Sunday Evening to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway
The next event will be held over the weekend of the 23rd, 24th & 25th June 2023. An event that will mark the Centenary of the original Welsh Highland Railway opening in 1923
