The 700 series (新幹線700系電車) is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type built between 1997 and 2006, and entering service in 1999. Originally designated as "N300" during the development phase, they formed the next generation of Shinkansen vehicles jointly designed by JR Central (東海旅客鉄道, JR東海) and JR West (西日本旅客鉄道, JR西日本) for use on the Tōkaidō and San'yō Shinkansen. Though it has since been withdrawn from service on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen (東海道新幹線), it continues to operate on the San'yō Shinkansen (山陽新幹線).
The 700-7000 series (700系7000番台) "Hikari Rail Star" (ひかりレールスター, 光號鐵路之星) variant are 8-car sets operated by JR West on through-running Kodama (こだま, 回音號) services between Shin-Osaka (新大阪駅) and Hakata (博多駅) on the San'yō Shinkansen (山陽新幹線).
Due to the old vehicles, all 700 series vehicles except 700-7000 have been retired. The 700-3000 series has not yet been retired, but has been withdrawn from operation.
As of this year, the 700 series are also the only Japanese Shinkansen trains that have been successfully exported overseas. The 700T (THSR 700T, 台湾高速鉄道700T型電車, 台灣高速鐵路700T型電聯車) used by Taiwan High Speed Rail is based on the 700 series and transformed into a Taiwan-specific version.
The San'yō Shinkansen (山陽新幹線) is a line of the Japanese Shinkansen high-speed rail network, connecting Shin-Osaka (新大阪駅) in Osaka with Hakata Station in Fukuoka (福岡市), the two largest cities in western Japan.
It covers a distance of approximately 553.7 kilometers (344 miles) from Shin-Osaka to Fukuoka Hakata. The line officially opened for full operation in March 1975.
Trains on the San'yō Shinkansen operate at speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph), making it one of the fastest rail services in Japan (fastest rail services in western Japan). The Shinkansen provides vital connectivity to cities such as Osaka and Hakata (Fukuoka), significantly reducing travel times compared to traditional trains.
Together, these services have greatly enhanced both travel and economic ties in the western Japan region.
