The N700 series (新幹線N700系電車) is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train with tilting capability developed jointly by JR Central (東海旅客鉄道, JR東海) and JR West (西日本旅客鉄道, JR西日本) for use on the Tōkaidō and San'yō Shinkansen lines since 2007, and is operated by JR Kyushu (九州旅客鉄道, JR九州) on the Kyushu Shinkansen.
The N700A series ("A" is small A, or named N700-5000, N700系5000番台) variant are 16-car sets operated by JR West on through-running Nozomi (のぞみ, 希望號), Hikari (ひかり, 光號) and Kodama (こだま, 回音號) services between Tokyo (東京駅) and Hakata (博多駅) on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen
(東海道新幹線) and San'yō Shinkansen (山陽新幹線). Some trains operate continuously on San'yō and Tōkaidō Shinkansen lines (直通運転), connecting Tokyo and Hakata in five hours.
The San'yō Shinkansen (山陽新幹線) is a line of the Japanese Shinkansen high-speed rail network, connecting Shin-Osaka (新大阪駅) in Osaka with Hakata Station in Fukuoka (福岡市), the two largest cities in western Japan.
It covers a distance of approximately 553.7 kilometers (344 miles) from Shin-Osaka to Fukuoka Hakata. The line officially opened for full operation in March 1975.
Trains on the San'yō Shinkansen operate at speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph), making it one of the fastest rail services in Japan (fastest rail services in western Japan). The Shinkansen provides vital connectivity to cities such as Osaka and Hakata (Fukuoka), significantly reducing travel times compared to traditional trains.
Together, these services have greatly enhanced both travel and economic ties in the western Japan region.
