At Balham there is London Underground Northern line interchange, at Clapham Junction there is Overground Mildmay and Windrush line interchange along with South Western Railway connections. At London Victoria there is interchange with Gatwick Express and Southeastern as well as Underground Circle, District and Victoria lines.

The rolling stock on this route in now entierly class 377 Electrostar trains which replaced the older class 455 EMU trains on most Southern metro routes in south London.

This route is electrified using third rail DC throughout. The Epsom Downs branch is mainly single track with doublke track between Sutton and West Croydon. To London this service uses the slow lines between Selhurst and London Victoria.
