Regions with intensive #livestock farming, such as Flanders, face a major challenge: some areas have too much #manure, while others continue to rely on costly synthetic #fertilisers. This imbalance creates environmental problems such as ammonia emissions and nitrate leaching, as well as economic inefficiencies for farmers, who must manage surplus manure and purchase additional nitrogen.
Now an innovative technology called the stripping–scrubbing process offers a sustainable solution. It recovers nitrogen from manure by releasing ammonia and capturing it as ammonium salts, which are high-quality fertilisers that crops can absorb directly. These products meet the EU's RENURE (REcovered Nitrogen from manuRE) criteria, meaning they can safely replace synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. The process also reduces nitrogen losses to the air and water, cuts greenhouse gas emissions and supports a more circular nutrient economy on farms.
By converting surplus manure into valuable fertiliser, the stripping–scrubbing process helps farmers to save money, comply with EU regulations and protect the environment.
