Duncannon's Bold Experiment: Can Farmers Fix Water Quality?

Описание: Although most of Europe’s bathing waters meet good quality standards, rural and remote areas still face serious challenges. In Duncannon, Ireland, for example, the loss of Blue Flag status in 2007 was due to water pollution caused by poor wastewater treatment, agricultural runoff and faecal bacteria from livestock. In response, local farmers, authorities and scientists joined forces to improve water quality by launching the Duncannon Blue Flag Farming & Communities Scheme.

Farmers implemented a wide range of practical on-farm measures, such as fencing livestock away from streams, sediment traps and more. Thanks to these coordinated, long-term efforts, water quality in Duncannon improved steadily, benefiting both farming and the local community. Understanding the environmental science behind these problems is crucial for developing solutions to protect our rivers and oceans.
