"I’m idealist — I believe deeply in the power of innovation. But I’m also a tech realist.," says Karen Kornbluh. As a technology policy innovator, she knows that society can't sit idly by while tech and tech businesses redesign our future -- a perspective that could empower citizens. As she says: "AI can’t cure rare diseases if we don’t fund research. It won’t raise living standards if we allow algorithms to replace workers." Instead we must "use our voices" as we have in the past to ensure AI improves living standards. Ambassador Karen Kornbluh is a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Technology and Senior Advisor for Emerging Technology at the Milken Institute. She recently served as Principal Deputy White House CTO and Director of the National Artificial Intelligence Office.
Previously, she served as U.S. Ambassador to the OECD in Paris and held senior roles at the Treasury Department and Federal Communications Commission. Earlier in her career, she worked as an economist in the private sector and as Executive Vice President at a global data firm.
Profiled by The New York Times as “Fighting for Economic Equality,” Kornbluh has chaired the boards of Radio Free Europe and the Open Technology Fund. Her writing appears in Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Maryland Economic Commission. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
