Episode 24 :“Judge Like Jesus” Scripture: Matthew 7:1–2; John 8:1–11. Live Bible Study – Be Encouraged by Jesus Christ Presented by Minister Timothy Thomas.
In this clarifying and much‑needed episode, Minister Timothy Thomas teaches on what it means to judge like Jesus. Many people quote Matthew 7:1—“Judge not, that ye be not judged”—but they often misunderstand what Jesus meant. Jesus was not forbidding judgment altogether; He was forbidding condemnation. Condemnation is complete disapproval, sentencing someone to death, or passing judgment from our own viewpoint. Condemnation says, “You are beyond hope.” But righteous judgment sees through the eyes of God—through mercy, grace, truth, and restoration.
To bring balance, 1 Corinthians 6:1–3 teaches that believers should judge smaller matters among themselves rather than taking disputes before the unjust or the world. Paul even says we will judge angels in the future. This means God has given His people the capacity to judge—but to judge rightly.
The perfect example is found in John 8:1–11, where the woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus. The religious leaders came to condemn her. Jesus came to restore her. He judged the situation perfectly—not by appearance, not by accusation, not by emotion, but by righteous judgment. Jesus reminded them—and us—that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. This truth should humble us and shape how we judge others. We must judge with mercy and grace, because that is how God judges us. The woman left justified and free. The accusers left convicted in their own conscience.
We often judge the fruit—the outward behavior—but God sees the root. And unless the fruit in our own life is right, we cannot judge according to God’s example.
What Is Righteous Judgment?
Righteous judgment is seeing and evaluating a matter from God’s perspective—according to His Word, His character, and His Spirit—expressed in love, peace, gentleness, joy, temperance, mercy, and truth. It never condemns, never writes people off, never crushes the broken, and never elevates self; instead, it seeks restoration, healing, correction, and truth spoken in love. Jesus said, “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24), meaning we must not judge by what we see, hear, assume, feel, or perceive outwardly, but judge like Jesus—through mercy, truth, and the heart of God.
