Kootanchoru is a popular lunch dish from Tirunelveli. This is our family favourite rice and it is a one pot wonder meal as it is rich in nutrients as it contains lots of vegetables and dals. We prepare this rice frequently for special events and family get togethers. It goes well with appalams and is a healthy option for brunch or travel.

Kootan Chooru Ingredients:
Rice - 1 cup
Toor dal - 1/4 cup
Sambar powder - 1.5 tbsp
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Asafoetida - 1 tsp
Veggies (carrot, beans, potato, drumstick, snake guard) - 2 cup
Onion - 1
Small onion - 7 nos
Garlic cloves - 6
Murunga keerai - 1 cup
Coconut - 1/2 cup
Jeera- 1 tsp
puli - small lime size
Coconut oil - 1.5 tbsp
Ghee - 2 tsp (optional)
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
Quick Recipe:
🥙 In a cooker, add cleaned toor dal and 1 cup water and cook for 1 whistle
🥙 Cut all the vegetables and keep it aside
🥙 In a pan, pour 1 tsp coconut oil and add murunka keerai and saute well and keep it aside
🥙 In a pan, pour coconut oil and add crushed small onion and garlic and saute well until it becomes light brown and keep it aside
🥙 Again in a pan, pour coconut oil and add mustard seeds and curry leaves and saute it, then add sliced onion and green chilli and saute well and keep it aside
🥙 Grind coconut and jeera together in a mixie in to a paste
🥙 In a cooker add all the sauted ingredients, vegetables, turmeric powder, sambar powder, asafoetida, puli water, coconut paste and salt and mix well, then add 3 1/2 cup of water and cook for 3 whistle
🥙 Open the cooker, add ghee and coriander leaves and mix well and it’s ready.
Milagai Pachadi Ingredients:
Small onion - 12 to 15 nos
Green chilli - 8
Small lemon size puli
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
Asafoetida - 1 tsp
Gingelly oil - 1 tbsp
salt
Jaggery - 1 tbsp
Quick Recipe:
🍲 In a cooker pour gingelly oil, add mustard seeds and curry leaves and saute it, then add small onion, green chilli and saute well
🍲 Add turmeric powder, sambar powder, asafoetida,puli water and salt and mix well and then add jaggery and mix it well and cook for 6 whistle
🍲 After 6 whistles, open the cooker and mash the mixture with a masher and milagai pachadi is ready
