This video shows you how to safely change a flat tire on your 2012–2017 Volkswagen Tiguan. Changing a tire on a German SUV involves a few specific steps—like removing plastic lug nut covers and identifying reinforced jack points—that differ from other vehicles. We’ll show you how to find your hidden tool kit and swap the wheel in under 15 minutes.
This guide was filmed on a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (First Generation / Limited) and applies to:
2009–2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (All trims)
(Also applies to the 2018 Tiguan Limited)
Where is the Spare Tire & Tool Kit?
Spare Tire: Located under the trunk floor panel. Turn the center plastic wing nut counter-clockwise to release the tire.
Jack & Tools: These are usually tucked into the left-side (driver's side) rear quarter panel behind a removable plastic cover, though some models store them in a foam tray inside the spare tire itself.
Tools you will need (included in your VW kit):
Scissor Jack
Lug Wrench (17mm)
Lug Nut Cover Puller: A small wire loop tool (looks like a bent paperclip or tweezers).
Wheel Lock Key: If your Tiguan has locking lugs, this adapter is usually in the tool bag.
Gloves & Safety Glasses
Steps Covered:
Safety First: Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, and put the car in "Park."
Remove the Caps: Use the wire loop tool to pull off the plastic lug nut covers. They look like real nuts but are just decorative caps!
Loosen the Lugs: While the tire is still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen each bolt 1/2 turn (counter-clockwise).
Jack Points: Locate the small indented triangle or notch on the metal rocker panel. Place the jack head directly under this reinforced "pinch weld."
Lift and Swap: Raise the car until the flat tire clears the ground. Remove the bolts, swap the wheels, and hand-tighten the bolts in a star pattern.
Lower and Torque: Lower the car and give the bolts a final snugging.
Specifications:
Torque Spec: Approximately 103 lb-ft (140 Nm).
Speed Limit: Do not exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) on the compact spare.
Distance: Limit driving to under 50 miles—the "donut" is for emergency use only!
