Robert Kasibante, the NPP Presidential Candidate, has today withdrawn his presidential petition citing inadequate financial resources to continue with the case.
In a unanimous decision led by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, the nine-member panel allowed former presidential candidate Robert Kasibante to withdraw his petition challenging Museveni’s victory. While all justices agreed to the withdrawal, there was a split on one key issue — who should pay the legal costs.
The Court emphasized that a presidential election petition is not an ordinary lawsuit but a matter of the highest constitutional importance. Filing such a case, the justices noted, carries serious national, legal, and financial implications. Ultimately, the majority ruled that each party should bear its own costs — a decision that sparked a dissent from Justice Christopher Izama Madrama, who argued that the law requires a withdrawing petitioner to pay. Kasibante cited financial constraints and lack of sufficient evidence to sustain the petition, which alleged widespread electoral irregularities. With the withdrawal now confirmed, Museveni — who was declared winner by the Electoral Commission — stands conclusively elected and is ожидаing to be sworn in for the 2026–2031 term.
This ruling officially closes the chapter on the 2026 presidential election petitions.
