Uganda’s 2026 political season is far from over. After the General Election, a new and powerful battle is unfolding inside the 12th Parliament the race for Speaker.
In a dramatic move, Norbert Mao, President General of the Democratic Party and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has declared his intention to contest for the Speakership. Framing his bid as a mission to “Balance the Boat,” Mao argues that Uganda needs regional and institutional balance at the highest levels of leadership.
But standing in his path is the incumbent, Anita Among, who is widely believed to have strong backing within the ruling establishment. Her supporters say continuity guarantees stability in a polarized Parliament.
