'Earth's King' is the last song in the cycle, 'A Swift Radiant Morning' for baritone and piano, five songs to poems and letters written by WW1-poet Charles Sorley, who died aged 20 in the Battle of the Somme in the first months of the war. The texts are representative of his short life, from his schooldays at Marlborough College, through his 'gap year' in Germany, where he made many friends, to the battlefield. He served dutifully, but sadly, seeing his German adversaries as equals.
The work was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival, Hereford, 2015, and premiered by Roderick Williams and Susie Allan, who are the soloists on this recording
