Most travelers come to Huaraz as a stopover on a launch point–and do not intend to get ingrained for over a month. Leave it to us to buck that trend, and stay for 6 weeks. Good thing we did too; each week we fell deeper and deeper in love with this town and the people who call it home.
Huaraz sets against the stunning Cordillera Blanca, home to snow-capped peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and dramatic alpine landscapes. The high-altitude natural beauty is also the historical home of one of Peru’s oldest civilizations. World renowned for trekking and alpine climbing, athletes from around the world visit Huaraz to tackle towering mountains like Huascarán, the highest in Peru, looking down on the city.

Hiking in Peru, especially around Machu Picchu, is a key driver for tourism to the Andes of Peru. Although Huaraz is far from Cusco, we believe it is one of the best places to visit in Peru for an authentic Andean experience. Here, you can experience Peruvian culture, Peruvian food, and modern / ancient Peruvian history. Oh, and there is hiking too–world class–without the crowds!

Huaraz is the final stop on our Latin American adventure, and part of our pivot to stories about slower travel. During this phase, we spent 5 months uncovering 3 breathtaking towns in South America: Coyhaique Chile, the heart of Patagonia; Bariloche , the chocolate capital of Argentina; and Huaraz, Peru's Switzerland.
