1) Overture to the opera “Armida” (1782)
Vincenzo Righini was born in Bologna, on January 22, 1756, just five days before the birth of W. A. Mozart. He had the good fortune to study with Padre Martini, who was a famous composer of the time. At the age of thirteen, he had his musical debut as a singer in Florence. His debut as an opera composer cam when he was eighteen years old: his opera buffa “La vedova scaltra” was performed in Prague in 1774. Righini lived in Prague from 1774 to 1777, the year in which he moved to Vienna. There, he made a living as a music teacher and composers; a number of his operas were performed at the famous Burgtheater. He later lived and worked in Mainz, Berlin and Potsdam, though he returned to Bologna in his later years, and it was there that he died. The present piece is from a harpsichord (or piano) transcription of Righini’s Singspiel “Armida”; you shall hear to opening overture of that work. Such keyboard transcriptions of pieces from operas were popular in the 18th century, as they gave music lovers the opportunity to hear such works. After all, there were no recordings back then!
