(This composer’s surname is sometimes spelled “Dumage”, but is also given as “Du Mage”.)
The first teacher of Pierre Dumage was most likely his father, who was the organist at Beauvais cathedral. At some point during his youth, Dumage moved to Paris, where he studied under Louis Marchand. He also became a friend of Nicolas Lebègue, who assisted him in obtaining a position as organist at the Collegiate Church of Saint-Quentin. In 1710, he received a more prestigious position, that of organist at the Cathedral of Laon. Unfortunately, in 1719, Dumage had disagreements with the clergy there and quit his post, whereafter he became a civil servant, and apparently ceased all musical activity, at least on the professional level. Dumage left only one publication to posterity: an organ suite from 1708, entitled “Premier Livre d’Orgue”, which contains eight pieces. For this recording, I have selected three of those pieces which work well on the harpsichord.
