Polly Young (1749-1799): Sonata in G-Major

This highly talented female composer is also known as Mary Young, Maria Young, Polly Barthélemon and Maria Barthélemon. I assume that “Mary or Maria” was one of her given names at birth; the “Barthélemon” was her surname after she married François-Hippolyte Barthélemon, who himself was a musician and composer. Polly was born into a very musical family: her grandfather, Charles Young, and her uncle, Anthony Young, were both reputable organists and composers; three of her aunts were famous singers; two of her sisters were singers as well. And as if that weren’t enough, her aunt Celia was the wife of the famous composer Thomas Arne, and they in turn had a son who was a composer.
All of this helps explain why Polly was a child prodigy: at the age of only six she was singing in public, and was praised for both the beauty of her voice as well as her precision. The child also became a harpsichordist of exceptional talent. In September 1762, at the age of thirteen, she made her London debut at the Covent Garden Theatre; she not only sang, but between acts, she played the harpsichord for the appreciative public. She married at the age of seventeen, after which she concentrated mostly on singing Italian operas, but also on composing. Not surprisingly, the Barthélemons’ daughter Celia became a musician – and a composer. When Joseph Haydn was in England in 1792, he visited Polly and her family; he apparently recognized their musical talent. The present work – a fine sonata in G Major – was published in London, and dedicated to Haydn.
