How many of the ‘guru’s celebrating @EmmaRaducanu’s US Open triumph derided her decision to regroup at Wimbledon, failing to recognise it as the strategic masterclass it was? #SuccessIsLumpy not Linear. #JediReflections
Transcript:
Hello there.
Emma Raducanu. You can't have failed to see some story about her.
It's remarkable. I was listening to the radio this morning and I've already heard a story that was basically; here's the man behind the woman, and her success!
Absolutely crazy.
I hope she's a lesson for us.
I hope she's a lesson for us.
People question her, not just salty journalists and, I don't know, old timer tennis pros who critiqued her talent, and her resilience, and her mental strength, and everything else about her.
Tons of people questioned whether she had the strength for this.
Not realising that part of success, a huge part of success, is not just brute strength, barrelling forward against all comers. But sometimes knowing that you need to take a step back to think strategically.
Sometimes you need to take a step back to recuperate, in order to make that next big leap.
Some of you will be managing people who have come to you with this exact same thing. They've been buried deep in something and they've told you they just need a bit of time to recover and recuperate and you've looked at them as if they're lazy. Or as if they lack resilience. Or if they don't have mental strength.
Learn from this.
Don't just marvel in this remarkable young woman's achievement.
Understand what it means for you and your leadership.
The next time somebody tells you they've had enough, maybe, maybe if you paid attention you'd realise they do need to take a step back. It's not a forever break. It's just a step back so that they can leap forward.
The other part of this is that the woman that was beaten, Leylah Fernandez I think, she's also a story of success.
Not just because another teenager who made it to the final of a grand slam but because sometimes success is getting oh so close to glory, and then not having your name even whispered the next day.
Let's watch her.
Because every person I know who's done anything remotely remarkable has been there when they've been outperformed at the final moment, not through apathy, not through laziness, but just because.
Success is lumpy, ugly.
It's not this linear thing you see in story books.
Think about what part you can play to enable success of other people.
Perhaps it will look a little non-traditional.
Before they finally blossom and achieve the remarkable.
