Hello there.
I'm posting this right now, in part because I've just been to the gym and I wanted to prove to everybody that I'm actually still doing it.
But also because there is a snippet of sunshine and it's not unconscionably loud in the surroundings of my house.
So I thought I'd grab this quick moment.
This is a little advisory.
I push you, encourage you, all to be truly vigilant about your impact on the people around you.
I encourage us all to recognise the part that each of us plays in creating the kind of cultures in our workplaces and schools and wherever else, our communities, where the most people can thrive.
I have the privilege, through my coaching, some of the Masterminds, and other things that I do.
And I've noticed it also in our Giant Community, I have this privilege to get to know people who are so keen, so amazingly committed, and yet what I'm noticing now, with a few of my clients, is just utterly extreme burnout.
And I'm concerned about you.
This is not me telling you to, that you should ease off and abandon our roles as, you know, as being a positive influence around us, but I want you to be a Giant for others for the long term, not to shine brightly and burn out.
I really want you to consider, and many of us are so poor at this, consider yes, are you doing those recuperative things? Like going to the gym, whether you like it or not. Like yoga or meditation, or mindfulness, or something that enhances you.
Time alone, reading. Whatever it is, are you doing that stuff?
But also have you noticed any of the tell tale signs?
Have you noticed that things that used to bring you joy are no longer bringing you joy?
Successes, whether they're in the workplace or outside of, things that otherwise would have made you want to - internally at least - celebrate, are meaningless to you in the moment.
Have you found yourself languishing and unable to get up or get on with stuff?
If any of these things are true, consider that you might be, hopefully, in the early stages of burnout.
That place where, you've pushed yourself too hard and not done enough to recuperate.
And if that's the case, you've got to find a way to fill your cup. You cannot pour from an empty cup. You've got to find a way.
I really feel this is my responsibility because I, many of you, I have been the one that has been that person to push you to deliver as leaders, whether named or unnamed. And now I'm just reminding you: that I see your efforts, I appreciate what you are doing but I want you to be a Giant for the long term, not just for a year.
Take care of yourselves.
Pick something to do to recuperate.
