Tonight, I skipped the Shinkansen and took a 10-hour overnight bus from Tokyo to rural Japan.
The train would cost around ¥15,000 ($100).
The bus costs ¥6,000–¥12,000 ($40–$80).
It’s slower.
Less comfortable.
But sometimes more practical.
Along the way, I pass something very Japanese — pachinko.
Japan officially says there are no casinos.
But pachinko operates in a unique legal gray system involving “prizes” and separate exchange offices.
Everyone understands how it works.
But no one officially acknowledges it.
After arriving, I drive deep into the mountains to visit my wife’s parents.
Narrow national highways.
Winding roads.
Deer and wild boar at night.
We stop at “Michi-no-Eki,” government roadside stations where you can rest and buy local specialties.
This is rural Japan.
Maybe growing up in the countryside is why my small Tokyo apartment sometimes feels tight.
Have you ever chosen a slower journey on purpose?
Would you take a 10-hour overnight bus to save money or time?
