The interwar Fleet Problems, of the United States Navy, are a fun topic. These massive fleet exercises were as much giant experiments as training. Most of them were testing some new technique, technology, or tactic. Sometimes all of the above.
Fleet Problem XII is a classic example of this. The Navy intended to test their brand new aircraft carriers against battleships. While also seeing how well they could defend the Panama Canal.
In both cases, this Fleet Problem would show the way to the future. Even if aircraft carriers weren't quite there yet.
