'Surviving a duel with battleships' is probably not your first thought for a cruiser. Cruisers are smaller ships, meant to engage other cruisers and even lighter targets. Not to get in a brawl with battleships. However, it could and would happen.
The Japanese cruiser, Nisshin, is a prime example. Forced into the battle line of the Russo-Japanese War due to losses in battleships. Where not once, but *twice*, she would be forced to duel Russian battleships. And each time, Nisshin came away in one piece. More or less.
She earned a reputation as a tough and reliable ship because of this. And probably contributed to the fad of putting big cruisers (armored or battle) into the battle line.
...for better or worse.
