Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Christine Elliott announced on Thursday that the province was moving to activate an "emergency brake" shutdown for four weeks in the province in response to rising COVID-19 cases and strained capacity in intensive care units.
Under the "emergency brake," the province's 34 health units will see personal care and fitness services prohibited. Indoor and outdoor dining will also not be allowed, with only takeout, delivery and drive-through service permitted. Indoor gatherings are also restricted to only a person's immediate households and outdoor events limited to five people. Pharmacies and retail that primarily sells food will be able to stay open at 50 per cent capacity, with all other retail remaining open at 25 per cent capacity.
The government is also asking Ontarians to limit trips outside the home to necessities, but Elliott stressed they would not implement a stay-at-home order due to the harm they say the last order had on children and adults and with the warm weather approaching, they want people to safely be able to enjoy the outdoors.
Schools will also remain open, but will be monitored and shut down if necessary.
