Ford “very confident” new Michigan-Ontario bridge will open despite Trump threats

Описание: Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to block the opening of the new Gordie Howe International Bridge that connects Windsor, Ont. and Detroit, Mich.

Trump called for immediate negotiations over the new trade route in a Truth Social post shared Monday, demanding ownership of “at least one half of this asset,” claiming that the U.S. should be “compensated for everything we have given” Canada.

“If President Trump didn't want this to go forward, why did he fast track it [in 2017]?” Ford queried to reporters in Toronto on Tuesday. “All of a sudden, he changed his mind and said it's not good… [and when] we pay off our side of the bridge, it's going to be Michigan that owns half of it,” he added.

Regarding the ban he implemented last year keeping American liquor off Ontario’s LCBO store shelves, Ford encouraged Ontarians to “double down,” noting Canada and the U.S. could “resolve it in a minute” if Trump would reverse his “unfair tariffs” – the ones that triggered the ban in the first place.

“Just imagine if you took a different approach, President Trump, how wealthy and strong the whole world could be and everyone would be thriving and prospering,” Ford said. “He's hurting the American people and the American economy,” he added.
